The mumblings of a Christian autistic husband, dad, IT guy and amateur radio operator - Will Brokenbourgh / AF7EC
Bye (again) X
"Bad company corrupts good character" - 1 Corinthians 15:33
Yes, I left X (aka Twitter) once again.
I have been on X before, but decided to sign up for a new account when my friend kept telling me about important news he saw on X. Yes, X is a fire-hose of news, although some is fake and some is partially inaccurate.
Throughout the months I had been on X this time around, I was starting to develop some connections with people I follow on YouTube, as well as new folks who enjoy amateur radio, tech stuff and Christian topics. It was heading in a relatively positive direction. Then something happened with the algorithm and I started getting way more suggestions for violent, sexual and and offensive posts. Despite muting the accounts that were suggested, they just seemed to become more and more numerous, to the point where I was spending more time muting bad posts than enjoying good posts. I finally had enough today.
I get it -- Elon Musk is allowing free speech on X. But that means enduring hundreds of posts with half-naked women, videos of people punching each other, tons of yucky anime stuff and every other post having the "f"-word in it. If Musk and X were serious about having a great user experience, you think the 'algorithm' would recognize what I like and dislike, but it seems as dumb as a box of rocks.
You may say I'm thin-skinned -- you might be right. I'm an Christian who is also autistic and I have had the most difficult time fitting in anywhere on social media. When I used Facebook more than a decade ago, it was the same thing. Some folks posting stupid and worthless things were getting hundreds, if not thousands of likes, while my more thoughtful and faith-filled posts were pretty much ignored. My expectations were wildly different than reality, and I felt like it all was a waste of time. I feel that way about X now, as well.
I will miss the ability to see breaking news that is often on X, but really, the percentage of absolute garbage to good posts is like 95 percent garbage to 5 percent good. I can't 'unsee' the nasty stuff, so why put myself in a position where I'm constantly exposed to it?
If anyone knows of a social media platform where Christian autistic people may feel more accepted and are interacted with in a positivie way, let me know. It's got to be clean without all the filth, violence and bad language these other platforms offer up. It also must not be Facebook, X, YouTube, Instagram, Bluesky, and so-on.
God bless you, and thank you for reading!
About me
First and foremost I'm a follower of Jesus Christ. After that, I'm a blessed husband,
father and grandfather. I do remote computer work for a living although it's mostly
part-time. I'm an amateur radio operator - AF7EC. When I'm not working on the endless
list of house and car projects, I like to tinker with electronics, like to listen to
shortwave radio and write software (mostly open-source) in C, C++, Python and Free
Pascal. I usually run Linux as my main operating system but sometimes I'm forced to
endure macOS and Windows 11 for gaming with my son or testing software. Overall, I am
a big nobody, but always willing to share about Jesus and all that God has done for me
and my family.
